For those of you that don’t know what the Kraken is, it’s a giant octopus said to have been the demise of many a seaman.
Mrs J admits the headline is sensationalist, especially considering the cuttlefish came pre-cut in a small, black, plastic container.
She can’t help herself sometimes, a’right?
Anyway, the reason why cuttlefish is on the menu tonight is because it’s cheap and environmentally friendly.
Ok, so she didn’t consider the environment (though it’s true). It was mainly because it’s cheap. More than cheap, in fact. We’re talking half price per kilo compared to other seafood in Mrs J’s store.
Mrs J is becoming more food-price aware these days. However, this doesn’t mean that she’s prepared to eat crappy food. It’s just a different balance. More money means getting away with less time spent planning and cooking. More time means the same food experience can be achieved on a tighter budget.
This is the theory, at least. Mrs J will get back to you in 6 months or so and tell you how it worked out.
Mrs J has eaten some extremely good variations on cuttlefish and other octopus in her life. The absolute best ever, no contest, in Greece. Grilled with seasalt, olive oil, oregano and lemon. To. Die. For.
Mrs J didn’t even consider emulating this recipe. Instead, she blitzed some garlic, olive oil, white onion, lemon juice and parsley. Salt and pepper, bien sur.
Then dumped the fried cuttlefish in it.
Then soft fried some store-bought tortillas.
At this point, she quickly reheated the cuttlefish and parsley mixture in the pan, just for 30 seconds, then distributed on tortillas with some fresh cut tomatoes and extra parsley.
It works y’all. Mrs J looks forward to working more with cuttlefish in the months to come.
And meat lovers need not worry, Mrs J is not going to give up on beef. Nor chicken or pork.
Variation, after all, is the spice of life.
