If there’s one thing that Mrs J never considered herself to be in her morethan30butnotquite40yet years of existence it is an Artist. From the beginning of Mrs J’s understanding of life, the universe and everything, Artists existed in the same plane as Profets.

Artists: Channelers of Beauty and/or Truth. They were people chosen by a greater power to receive Talent. To be an Artist equalled being Unique.

And yes, those caps are there for a reason.

Mrs J thinks she’s been good with Artists. Possibly because she’s idolized them and thought herself to be fundamentally different. She may not always have pleased them but, hey, she did good.

Over the years somehow the concept of the Artist (for Mrs J) also came to mean being uniquelly and undeniably skilled in a method of expression. Be it design, video, painting, writing, music, photography … it became impossible (in Mrs J’s mind) to be an Artist unless you were a master of your craft.

Probably this had something to do with Mrs J’s growing resentment of Hustlers. Hustlers being the (apparent) Winners in the unofficial war with the Workers. Mrs J always tended to respect and identify with Workers, so, probably, she didn’t want to admit that a Hustler could be an Artist.

It’s a theory.

In the meantime Mrs J has come a long way towards understanding the meaning of Winners and Success. And though she’s still some way off from understanding and appreciating the ways of the Hustler, she doesn’t feel like she’s at the mercy of an alien conspiracy any more. Thank goodness.

So maybe it’s also time for Mrs J to reconsider the concept of Artist.

Do you have to be the best in the world at your craft to be an Artist? Really? Do you have to have a specific Talent? Do you have to be born with the knowledge of what your craft is to be an Artist? Do you have to know you’re an Artist all your life? Isn’t every individual Unique and therefore an Artist, by definition?

Maybe being an Artist is more about embracing your individuality and expressing it, however imperfectly?

It’s a theory.
