It’s the beginning of the season to be jolly. The Christmas lights are on and twinkling. The advent candles are in place, the first one already lit. The first Christmas party is already under our belts.

Christmas as an ex-pat is always a little tricky. At least if you’re Scando. There are some things that you would never eat, or get hold of, except at Christmas in Scandoland. So imagine trying to get hold of them outside Scandoland. Never mind in time for Christmas.

In principle, there’s no Swedish coffee in this hotel*. Because Mrs J believes in eating local produce and going with the seasons whenever possible. Keeping an open mind and a curious palate is good. When the media seem to scream to eat Swedish, British, American, German or other “national” products, they really should be saying eat local, well cultivated, cared for, fresh.

Of course, there’s no real season for kiwi fruit in Europe. And Mrs J does buy produce from the other side of the world on occasion when particular recipes require. Cringingly.

And this Christmas is shaping up to be another import-filled feast. Luckily Mrs J’s parents got a good deal on their flights. 2x23kg. Should be enough.
